Dr Sarah- Lan Mathez-Stiefel

Sarah-Lan is Swiss and in July 2018 moved to Portugal from Peru. Prior to joining A Rocha Peru’s Reference Committee in January 2020, she was a Director on the Board of Directors (2017-2019), a Director of Science and Conservation (2014-2016), Executive Director of A Rocha Peru (2010-2014), and a member of the Advisory Council (2006-2010). Sarah-Lan is an ethnobiologist and has completed a Ph.D. in Human Geography from the University of Bern, Switzerland, on ethnobiological knowledge in the Andean highlands. She has been a post-doctoral researcher at the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF); where she carried out research on local knowledge, agroforestry systems, and adaptation to climate change in the Peruvian Andes.  Since 2002, she has been a researcher at the Centre for Development, and Environment at the University of Bern.  Within this role, Sarah-Lan coordinated natural resource management and sustainable development.
